From the Ground Up by Suzanne DuPlantis
On View: June 25 – September 25, 2022
About the Artist:
I presented my first solo art show, “The Way I See Things Now – Oil Paintings of Suzanne DuPlantis” in 2015 at Jenkins Arboretum and Gardens. It was so titled to reflect the process of seeing that began for me in 2010 when I started painting again after decades of a career as a singer. This show turned out to be among the arboretum’s most successful exhibitions ever. I was lucky enough to sell over 50 paintings, but I hasten to say that this was largely due to a wonderful community of fellow musicians and friends who were perfectly, amazingly, willing to support me in this new venture. I have made it my business in the years since, to become worthy of that support.
The background of my art is this: I spent a childhood drawing and painting before putting away my brushes for over a quarter of a century to pursue a career as a classical singer. In 2010 I took up brushes again and began to see things anew, thus commencing a serious and inexhaustible pursuit of art, light and learning. About Light, Thomas Aquinas said, “When you recognize her beauty, the eye applauds, the heart stands in ovation.” In appreciation of all Light – that which gives meaning to my days and inspires all my artistic endeavors – I stand in ovation.
